Anyone interested in finding out everything you could possibly want to know about a future as an Engineer should sign up outside room 200 for the “Engineer for a Day” program at the Fenn College of Engineering at CSU. This program will give you valuable information to help you make a decision about a career as an engineer. Attention Students: This is just a reminder that if you have any holiday shopping left the Pirate Shop is open this Wednesday and Friday from 11am to 1pm. It will also be open during the holiday concert on Wednesday, December 16.

If you love biology or chemistry labs and have ever thought about becoming a medical lab technologist, there will be a career program for you in the Distance Learning Lab during second period on January 7. In order to attend you must sign up before winter break, so please do so outside Room 200 ASAP.

Congratulations to the boys and girls swim team as they have had a great start to the season so far. Last week both teams went undefeated against Firelands and NDCL. Also, the girls placed first and the boys placed third this past weekend at the Rocket Relays. Congratulations, and please come out to support the swim team today at 7pm as they face their rival Westlake.

Cargill will award $1000 scholarships and $200 library donations to 350 high school seniors living near Cargill communities nationwide. The scholarship application and guidelines are online at www.cargill.com. Applications require the signature of a Cargill employee and are due on February 15. Each month a teacher receives recognition for doing something outstanding in the classroom. In the past, teachers have nominated each other for this award. Currently, we are asking students to nominate teachers. Teachers should be nominated for lessons, projects, or labs that go above and beyond typical instruction. Nomination forms can be picked up from Mrs. Rose or Mr. Wilhelms in the main office. Let a teacher know they make a difference and nominate them for teacher of the month.

Tickets for the fall play, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be on sale this week during lunch periods or you can purchase a ticket in Mrs. Garver's room. Tickets are $4 in advance or $5 at the door for students. The show will include many fabulous local celebrity participants. The play will run tomrrow through Friday. Be there or be S-Q-U-A-R-E square.

The Zonta Club of Cleveland, a local affiliate of Zonta International, provides an annual $1000 scholarship to at least one senior woman who submits an application and meets the following criteria: a minimum GPA of 3.0, documented participation in service activities, provision of an official transcript, and a letter of recommendation. The winner will be announced in April 2010. The award may be available for a possible one-year renewal with the submission of a second completed application the following year. Additional information is available in the Guidance Office's Scholarship File under the February 15 deadline section.

With the healthcare and computer fields the most promising areas of employment today, why not combine them and find out what it would be like to work in Healthcare Information Technology. A guest speaker will be coming to RRHS to discuss career opportunities as an interior decorator, fashion designer, fashion merchandiser, graphic designer, and other possibilities within digital media. The wrestling team is having a pancake breakfast this Saturday, November 21 from 8:00am until noon in the cafeteria. Tickets are $5 and you get all you can eat pancakes, muffins, and bagels, but don't get too crazy with the sausage; meat is expensive. It would be great if you would come and support our wrestling team. Our parents are the best pancake makers in Northeast Ohio!

Attention Seniors: The University of Akron's “Choose Ohio First” scholarship program is designed to provide financial as well as academic, professional, and personal support to incoming freshmen who are seeking degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics related fields. Scholarships will range in amount from $1500 to $4700 per academic year. More information is available in the Guidance Office's Scholarship Binder.

Attention Senior Women: The Ohio University's Women's Club of Greater Cleveland will be awarding a scholarship to a high school senior woman who will be attending Ohio University in the fall of 2010. This scholarship can range in value of up to full tuition. Electronic copies of the scholarship application are available at www.ouwomen.org. During the next two weeks in Social Studies classes, we will be hosting an Adopt-A-Family contest. This is your chance to give back and help out needy families during the holiday season. The class that collects the most money will win a pizza or donut party. We will be collecting money every day through Tuesday, December 1. Please give generously, and may the best class win!

As with all RRHS dances, this Friday's Dance Through the Decades is for RRHS students only unless a guest is preregistered in the Athletic and Activities Office. Forms to register a guest are available in Mr. Schultz's office it must be turned in before noon on Friday.

Jostens will return to take your graduation cap, gown, and announcement orders next Wednesday, November 18 from 1:30-3:15 in the Wagar Lobby. They will also be taking ring orders. Don't forget your deposits! Extra order forms for both graduation apparel and class rings are available in the main office.

It's time to order your 2010 yearbook! This year's cost is $57, $6 cheaper than the second sale in February. The first sale ends November 30.

The Rocky River Library is hosting a New Moon party tomorrow, November 19 from 4-6pm in the Community Room. Stop in to test your Twilight and New Moon IQ, discuss the books and movies, and enter to win fabulous prizes!

Driftwood is sponsoring another contest! The theme is Nightmares and Dreamscapes. Submit your poetry and short fiction to voight.erin@rrcs.org and your artwork and photos to room 118. The top two winners will be featured in the 2009-2010 edition of Driftwood. The contest ends December 18 and winners will be announced in January.

All girls interested in playing lacrosse should sign up at the Athletic Office. There will be a very important player/parent meeting on Wednesday, December 2 at 6:30 in Pirates' Cove. Please plan on attending if you will be playing lacrosse this spring season.

Attention Seniors: The University of Toledo's Presidential Scholarship application needs to be postmarked by December 1. Students with a minimum GPA of 3.8 and a 30 on the ACT or a 1340 on the SAT are encouraged to visit utoledo.edu/admission/presidential and complete the scholarship application, which includes an extracurricular resume, personal essays, and references. Students interested in applying for this scholarship must also submit the application for admission by December 1.

Attention all Club SODA members! There will be an important meeting on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:20 in room 241. Officer Hill from the Rocky River Police Department will be joining us to discuss ways Club SODA can get further involved in the community. We will also be working on the distracted driving campaign and voting on t-shirts. Attention Students! Winter sports student passes are now on sale! Get yours in the Athletic Office or at any RRHS home game for just $20. Your pass will get you into every home boys and girls basketball game, all swim meets, and all wrestling matches at RRHS or RRMS. One price, all games.

Ski & Snowboard Club registration is now underway at the Civic Center. Don't forget to register by November 20. Forms are available at the Student Activities Office or the Civic Center. Ski Club goes to Brandywine on Wednesdays after school in January and February.

The Class Clash is back! It's a friendly yearlong class competition for spirit. The homecoming floats were a great start to the competition. The sophomores pulled through for the first Class Clash victory of the year. The second competition will be at the upcoming Dance Through the Decades on November 20. The competition will be to see which class buys the most $5 presale tickets. The winning class will be awarded with the Spirit Sword and the honor of second Class Clash winner! So get your friends together and buy presale tickets to support your class.

Anyone interesed in trying out for the Pirate Girl Dance Team tryouts will be Tuesday, November 10 and Wednesday, November 11 at 4:00 in the Choir Room. The Sophomore Service Fundraiser is heading into its last week! Use this weekend to rake leaves, babysit, or do household chores to earn money for the Sophomore Fundraiser. Checks will be collected this week Monday through Friday during lunch periods. If you turn in money next week, you will receive a candy prize, PLUS you'll be entered in a raffle to earn free prom tickets, a movie pass package, or spirit wear! Our goal is $20 per person. If you raise $50 or more, you will receive a catered lunch! Help your class raise money for a great prom!

The third annual Powder Puff football game will be held next Wednesday, October 28 from 7:00-9:00pm. Girls can sign up during lunch periods in the Wagar Lobby. The cost is $15 per player, and all players will receive a t-shirt for the game. Girls, please note that money is due tomorrow by 6th period. Tickets to the game will be $4 at the door. The game will benefit the Rocky River Assistance Program and Junior Achievement, so come cheer on the girls while supporting two great causes!

Bobby caught a ten-yard touchdown pass, returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and intercepted a pass, his seventh of the season, breaking a school record when the Pirates upset Bay, 28-16. Attention Ohio State University Candidates: The OSU Alumni Club of Greater Cleveland is proud to sponsor two distinctive, merit-based scholarships for high school seniors living in Cuyahoga County who plan to attend OSU in fall 2010. The other scholarships awarded by the Alumni Club are seven OSU Alumni Scholarships in the amount of $600 each. To qualify, the alumni scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria: Rank in the upper quarter of their graduating class, have recommendations from the school principal, counselors, and/or teachers based on scholastic ability and character, and have a record of performing in extracurricular activities. Attention all students with parking tags: If you had a temporary license plate when you purchased a parking tag, you must see Mrs. McGovern as soon as you receive your permanent license plates to update your parking information.

Men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. It is their obligation and the law. Attention Seniors: The Cleveland Cavaliers and Majestic Steel USA, in partnership with Tri-C, Lakeland Community College, and LCCC, are pleased to offer six $2,000 scholarships for students pursuing a manufacturing career at one of the aforementioned institutions for the 2010-2011 school year. Additional information is available in the Guidance Office's Scholarship File under the March 1 deadline section.

Attention Seniors: Students considering applying to Drexel, Johnson and Wales, Kettering, RIT, U of Cincinnati, or the U of Toledo should consider applying for the National Commission for Cooperative Education's co-op scholarships. Attention Seniors: 40 scholarships are available at BGSU for incoming freshmen. The Ohio Board of Regents has awarded grant funds to BGSU in order to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. This unique program called Science and Math in Action offers recipients $2,000 the first year of college with increases each year up to at least $4,250 the fourth year. High school seniors considering teaching either secondary or middle childhood science or math may be eligible. Deadline to apply is January 15. Applications re now being accepted for the 210 MD Project: The Charles R. Drew Saturday Academy at the Cleveland Clinic. The Saturday Academy is an educational enrichment program designed for underrepresented minority high school students, grades 10-12, with health care career goal of becoming a physician, research scientist, physician investigator or physician leader. Saint Joseph Academy is seeking men for their fall musical "Seussical". The initial audition will be Wednesday, September 9 at 4:00 pm at Saint Joseph Academy. Callbacks will be Thursday, September 10. Performances will be in mid-November. The boys freshman basketball team is in the championship game of their tournament tonight at 7 in Vermillion. The team is 18-0 and have been lead through this incredible season by Micheal Pavlik and Justin Seffernick.

Here is an announcement for the girls and boys swim team:

Congratulations to the girls and boys swim team as they competed this past weekend at the District Tournament at CSU! The boys swam a great meet and just missed qualifying for the state meet by seven tenths of a second. The girls team is sending four of its members to the state meet. Paige Ferber qualified in the 50 free, Stephanie Thomas qualified in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and Meridith Hauck qualified in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Additionally, the girls relay team of Annie Camerino, Paige Ferber, Meredith Hauck, and Stephanie Thomas placed second in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and were two tenths of a second away from being considered for All-American status in their 200. The girls will compete this weekend at the state meet in Canton. Congratulations and good luck!

Congrats goes to the Boys Diving Team last night. Daniel O'Callaghan took 14 districts and Thomas Moran took 5th place. Thomas will be advancing on to States next Wednesday in Canton at the C.T Branin Natatorium.

Congratulations to the boys swim teams on their success at sectionals.The boys swim tea m swam Friday afternoon at Akron and is sending 6 boys: Mike Amrbrozic,James Harris, Mike Kariotakis, Danny Pris, Peter Stark, and Ian Stark to the District Tournament.
The girls team swam on Saturday at Lakewood and won the sectional>tournament. Girls advancing to Districts are: Paige Ferber, Maggie Kilbane,Abby Kacpura, Meredith Hauck, Stephanie Thomas, Annie Camerino, Marisa Hanson,Melissa Belanger,Katie Perez , Megan Auzenbergs,Natalie Golz. The Lebanese-Syrian Junior Womens League is awarding 2 $1,000 scholarships to an academically outstanding young man and women of Lebanese or Syrian descent residing int the Greater Cleveland area.the student must be graduating in either the January or June class of the current school year with a "B" or better scholastic average. Congratulations to the Rocky River speech and debate team for qualifying for a total of 16students for the state tournament taking place at Cincinnati next month. the team took 3rd place out of 30 teams and was the top public school in the district.

Congratulations to the Rocky River Band for hosting a successful Greater Cleveland Solo & Ensemble event on Saturday, thanks to the hard work of the staff, parents, and student volunteers.

Congratulations also goes out to the Band and Choir students who performed solos and small ensemble pieces at the Greater Cleveland and OMEA event last Saturday. The preparation and musical talents of those students were consistently recognized by the judges' ratings and comments.
