There will be a Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night to benefit the Pirate Press on April 28 from 5:30 to 7:30. 10% of the proceeds will go to the RRHS newspaper to pay for end-of-the-year issues. There will be a drawing for every student who purchases food to design their own page in the final issue.

In celebration of Earth Day, April 22, Environmental Club will be collecting old cell phones to recycle. Did you know cell phones contain toxic metals that can pollute the environment and threaten human health? If cell phones are recycled responsibly, the metals can be reused.So please take this opportunity to preserve Mother Earth by bringing your old cell phones until mid-May or until our bin is full. You will receive a Malley's Candy Bar for bring in old cell phones. Thank you!

Congratulations to the girls' track team for defeating Vermillion 92-44 on Wednesday. The girls remain undefeated in the conference. Come support the team at home on Wednesday against Bay Village.

Attentions girls volleyball players: the first lifting and conditioning session will be Tuesday, April 20th after school. Please report to the weight room. We will meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school until the end of the school year. See Coach Bennett with any questions.

With the growing need for students to pursue a career in the Health Care field, come to the distance learning lab on Tuesday April 27th during 5th period to find out about jobs in the Medical Assistant field. Learn what it takes to run a medical or dental office or how to handle patients and medical records in a hospital setting. This is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations in the near future. Sign up now outside of Room 200. Maybe this is the right career for you.

All this week make sure you buy your relay for life wristbands that glow in the dark for only a dollar. Pick yours up during all lunch periods.

There will be a drama club meeting tomorrow at 3;15 pm. Among other things we will be nominating new officers for next year and voting on all nominees for this year's Tony awards. Please plan to attend. See Mrs. Garver if you cannot make it.

Attention Seniors of Greek Descent: The Cleveland A.H.E.P.A. Scholarships Fund is awarding college scholarships to high school seniors of Greek descent who will graduate this year. Specific information is listed in the Guidance Office's Scholarships File under the April 15 deadline section.

Attention Seniors with an Intended Major in Education: The Up Side of Downs of Greater Cleveland,a non-profit organization which provides support, education, and advocacy for people with Down syndrome, their families and communities through out Northeast Ohio, is offering a renewable academic scholarship of $1,000 for students enrolled in a 4-year college in the state of Ohio and intended to become educators in the general education classroom. The spring musical, Kiss Me, Kate is next Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm. Tickets will be on sale next week during lunch periods. If you buy your ticket in advance, it is $4. Tickets at the door will cost $6. Hope to see you there!

All the students who have been interested in the psychology and psychiatry fields can sign up now to participate in a career program with doctors in this field. This is a rare opportunity to speak with psychologists and get all your questions answered since it is not a field that allows students to shadow. Take advantage of this opportunity on Wednesday March 24th during 2nd period by signing up outside of room 200.

On Saturday, March 27th there will be a Spaghetti Dinner at Rocky River High School. The dinner is being prepared by a River graduate, Chef Bryan Gorton. Tickets are $15 presale or $20 at the door. All the proceeds will benefit the 2010 Rocky River Relay For Life. We are currently looking for the March teacher of the Month. Each month a teacher is recognized for their achievements in the classroom. As a reminder- Local Scholarship Applications are available now in the Guidance Office. The deadline to submit completed applications and resumes to Mrs. Urbin in the Guidance Office is Friday, March 26th at 4pm. Students who fail to complete the required paperwork are not eligible for local scholarships.

Attention anyone interested in being on stage crew for the spring musical: We are meeting everyday except for Fridays at 4:30 on stage. Please see Mrs. Garver if you have any questions or conflicts.

There will be a Model United Nations meeting this Friday at 7:30am in Miss Delzani's room. We will be picking countries for our CSU conference so please be promptly.

The 5000 Year Leap Scholarship is being offered to the student who submits the best 1500 word essay after obtaining and reading the book The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen. Applications are available in the Guidance Office's Scholarship file under the April 1st deadline section.

The Club SODA Pizza and movie event has been rescheduled for this Friday, March 5th. We will meet right after school in room 241. There will be pizza, chips, and soda provided and we will be watching the movie “Get Smart.” This event is open to current, past and prospective members so if you are not currently a member but are interested in planning and participating in future activities, you are welcome to attend this event in room 241.

Boys Tennis Players must meet with Mr. Sinnema and Mr. Huntley tomorrow at 3:15pm in the Maroon and White Room. Practice schedules and future events will be discussed.

Any students interested in more information about careers in nursing can sign up outside of room 200. The Distance Learning Lab Presentation will be on Tuesday, March 9th during 2nd period.

Attention Senior Project Candidates: There will be a mandatory seminar meeting in the auditorium this Thursday, February 18. Your goals and activities form will be due. Please remember to write 5 goals and at least 5 specific activities. The Senior Project Application Form, which includes the goals and activities page, is available online.

Attention sophomores: If you are interested in being considered for enrollment in a Westshore Career-Technical Program at Lakewood High School next year, you must submit a completed application, including elective choices to Mrs. Urbin, Guidance Secretary, by the end of the day on Friday, February 19.

Attention seniors: The Ohio Society of CPA's is pleased to annonce they are accepting applications for the 2010 Cleveland Area High School Scholarship Program. The scholarships will be awarded to high school juniors ans seniors who submit the area's outstanding essays. More information is available in the Guidance Office's Scholarship File under the April 1 deadline section.

The Lebanese Syrian American Junior League is awarding two $1,000 college scholarships to an academically outstanding young man and woman of Lebanese or Syria

n descent residing in the Greater Cleveland area. The student must be graduating in either the January or June class of the current school year with a “B” or better scholastic average. More information is available in the Guidance Office's scholarship file under the March 31 deadline section.

The Lakewood/ Rocky River Rrotar Foundation offers grants for study in any accredited post-high school educational institution. Three grants of $2,500 and one grant of $1,000 will be awarded toward the cost of one year's tutition. Payments will be made to the institution for the recipient, with the understanding that the recipient will remain enrolled in the institution for a full year. More information is available

If you are interested in this year's talent show, please sign up in Mrs. Garver's room. There will be a run-through for acts on Tuesday, February 9 and the talent show is on Thursday, February 11 at 7:00. If you would just like to come out to watch all of the talent at RRHS, tickets will be on sale soon for $3.00 during school.

Attention current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students: The course registration process for the 2010/2011 school year has begun. Course requests must be entered on-line from February 2nd to February 11th. If internet access is unavailable at home,the media center and computer lab will be open from 7:30am to 4:00pm during course registration week. Registration forms will be collected in english class on Friday, February 12, 2010. If you have any questions regarding the scheduling process, please contact your assigned high school counselor.

The drama department will be selling Hershey's Kisses next week for Valentine's Day. Different colors will be sold to represent love, friendship, and secret admirer. Bags will be sold for $1 or 6 bags for $5. You can order them during lunch periods and they will be delivered next Friday during second period. Send some kisses for Valentine's Day!

Attention Key Clubbers: If you bring in one new paper towel roll and empty cleaned out milk jug to the meeting this Thursday you will receive a half hour for the semester. You must bring in both!

This week is National Teen Violence Prevention Week. During this week, let's re-evaluate relationships by looking for warning signs. Does your significant other act jealous, verbally criticize and abuse you, continually check up on you, force you into sex, threaten suicide, act violent while on drugs or alcohol, isolated socially, puts blame on others and break promises? 911 Driving School in Rocky River is offering $50 off the tuition to any student with a cumulative GPA greater then 3.0 or a GPA above 3.0 for the semester that just ended. You need to bring your report card from the school as proof and it could not be used in conjunction with any other offer.

There will be a special presentation for students interested in the biomedical engineering field. Sign up outside of room 200 to participate during 3rd period on Wednesday, Febuary 17th. The program will be about bio med technology and artificial limbs.

Now's the time to start donating to Hoops for Hunger. Bring in all the canned goods like soup and vegetables etc. that you can lay your hands on. Remember: This is a competition with Bay, so we definitely want to show them up. Cans will be collected at the basketball game on the 18th. The games will be televised, so support your boy's varsity basketball players and go to the game too. Bring all the cans to your 2nd period class.

Congratulations to Jake Thorn! Jake scored a perfect ten on the first meet of the AB Calculus Continental Mathematics League competition. Today is the 911 Driving School grand opening. This is the first instructional driving school operated and managed by local police officers. Every student is taught by a local police officer in the classroom and in the car! 911 Driving School is located on Detroit Road.

Men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their eighteenth birthday. It is their obligation and the law. Registration takes only a few minutes online at www.sss.gov, or a registration form can be picked up at the local post office. Please note, once you register you stay eligible for programs and benefits connected to registration, such as college loans and grants, federal jobs and job training, etc. Please see Mrs. Urbin in the Guidance Office with any questions.

If you love your biology or chemistry labs and have ever thought about becoming a medical lab technologist, there will be a career program for you in the Distance Learning Lab during second period on Thursday January 7. Come find out what this career entails and sign up outside of room 200.

It's not too early to start thinking about the talent show which will be on Thursday, February 11. If you would like to participate in this year's show, you must present your act on Tuesday, February 5 for approval and to be placed in the show. Acts in the past have ranged from singing, to dancing, to karate, to comedy, so no talent is off-limits. See Mrs. Garver with any questions.

Attention Spanish Club: There are still lots of tee-shirts for sale for just $7! See Senorita Barkin if you would like to purchase one. There is still Spanish tutoring in Senorita Barkin's room on Thursday mornings at 7:15. Tutors can earn service hours and tutorees can get extra help in preparation for the coming midterms. Please let Senorita Barkin know on Wednesdays if you plan on attending!

The hockey team will be selling 2010 calendars next week for $12. You may also preorder one this week during lunch periods and at hockey games or by asking any hockey team member. Proceeds from the calendar sales will be benefit this year's Relay for Life.

Attention Seniors: ESA Foundation Scholarship Applications are now available. Criteria for application is as follows: a minimum GPA of 3.00 OR a minimum score of 22 on the ACT and 1030 Critical Reading and Math on the SAT. Selection criteria include character, leadership, service, financial need, scholarship ability, and/or special criteria established by the donor. Additional information is available in the Guidance Office's Scholarship File under the February 1 deadline section.

Attention senior women interested in a chemistry major: The Flourine chapter of Iota Sigma Pi is pleased to announce the BP Scholarship for young women who demonstrate exceptional promise as future scientists. The BP scholarship will be awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, participation in scientific activities, and community service. Although standardized test scores and transcripts will be considered, they are above all looking for a demonstrated commitment to science. Award recipients will receive an initial $1000 cash award and recognition. An additional $1000 will be given the second year based on demonstration of continuation as a science major in an Ohio university and maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or better.
